Group Counseling

Our approach: I integrate ISTDP with the Mind/Body approaches of Dr. Herbert Benson and Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn. Mind/Body approaches offer tools for regulating anxiety, while ISTDP methods provide a way to uncover the underlying causes of emotional stress.

I offer groups for the treatment of anxiety and depression, as well as for Mind/ Body Syndrome-related issues such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, back pain, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Even when pain is the result of medical conditions—for example, back pain from a bulging disk--the way people manage their stress and emotions has a large effect on how they experience pain and recover from an illness. Often our culture, families of origin, and work environments teach us to ignore our anxiety and push through or resist the pain. However, when we chronically ignore our bodies’ signals of anxiety, the anxiety remains unregulated. Often the first step in treatment is to learn to pay attention to this anxiety so we have the ability to regulate it.
